Communiqué signed to accelerate the expansion of the SGR

Representatives from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a joint communiqué on 3rd May 2024 to accelerate the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). They agreed to mobilise resources for the completion of the SGR sections from Naivasha in Kenya to Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The communiqué also outlines plans to extend the SGR from Naivasha to Malaba and the Ugandan capital, as well as Kasese and Bwera to connect key economic centres and regions within the countries. Funding for the project will be provided by China's Exim Bank, the African Development Bank and Kenya's own Railway Development Fund.
