New government wants to focus on more railway projects again

The new government of Senegal, which was sworn in on 2nd April 2024, wants to devote more time to rail projects. During this, however, it immediately encounters difficulties. The extension of the electrified TER network in Dakar from Diamniadio to Blaise Diagne International Airport, which was originally due to open in December 2023, has been delayed. The 19 km extension requires the construction of nine bridges and four water crossings. The main contractor for the construction of the airport railway station is the Turkish company Summa. The project forms the second phase of Dakar's TER network, which began on 5th March 2022, was originally scheduled to take 17 months to build. The first TER phase runs over a 36 km section between the main railway station and Diamniadio. The line, which can carry up to 115,000 passengers per day, had transported around 43 million passengers by March 2024.
