TRC starts passenger rail transport on first section of the SGR

On 14th June 2024, the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) started operating passenger rail transport on the first 201.8 km section of the standard gauge line (SGR) between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro. Electric multiple units (EMU) and electric locomotives with passenger coaches from the manufacturer Hyundai Rotem are being used to operate the SGR, which are to be delivered in full by October 2024. The single-track line is designed for maximum speeds of 160 km/h for passenger rail transport and up to 120 km/h for rail freight transport. The last section up to the capital Dodoma is scheduled to go into operation on 25th July 2024. The journey time for the 460 km route from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma will then be reduced from eight hours by bus to around three hours.
