Construction of the first metro line in Cluj-Napoca begins

Construction of the first metro line in the city of Cluj-Napoca began on 5th June 2024. The 21 km long Metro Line 1 runs over 19 stations from the municipality of Floresti via the district of Mănăștur and the future regional hospital Piața Mărăști, with the line splitting there and ending north at the Muncii industrial area and south at Europa Unita station. In May 2023, the consortium of Alstom, Gülermak and Arcada was awarded the contract to build the line, worth around €1.8 billion (RON 9 billion). Alstom will supply the CBTC communication-based train control system with automation level 4 (GoA4). Metro line 1 is scheduled to open in 2031, although it is expected that the first seven stations could be completed as early as 2026. It will be operated by 26 three-car metro trains.
