São Paulo to privatise CPTM lines 11, 12 and 13

The government of the Brazilian federal state of São Paulo is planning to privatise lines 11, 12 and 13 of the suburban rail network operated by CPTM. The first of three public hearings on the concession process took place on 19th June 2024. The three lines together transport more than 17 million people per month. The process of transferring the lines to the private sector also includes the extension of line 13 with the construction of ten new stations. The acquiring company will then also have to modernise the infrastructure of the lines. According to the São Paulo Court of Audit TCE, the work to modernise and expand the power supply system for lines 11 and 12, which should have been completed in August 2015, has not yet been completed and has been left unfinished. The contract for this was signed with Siemens in 2012. However, CPTM claims that the work was completed in October 2023. According to the state-owned company, only the final adjustments are missing to issue the contract finalisation documents, which is expected in July 2024. Lines 8 and 9 of the CPTM network have already been privatised.
