The government of the Australian federal state of New South Wales (NSW) has allocated around €1.23 billion (AU$2 billion) from the 2024/25 state budget for construction work on the second stage of the Parramatta light rail transit (LRT) project in Sydney. Accordingly, construction work on the project will begin in 2024. The planning for the second phase had already received approval at state and federal level. The 10 km LRT line with 14 stations will run from Parramatta city centre to Sydney Olympic Park, passing through the suburbs of Camellia, Rydalmere, Wentworth Point, Ermington, and Melrose Park. The total journey time will be 37 minutes. The NSW government has selected three bidders for the stage two construction contracts: CPB Contractors and McConnell Dowell Constructors in a joint venture (JV), Fulton Hogan Construction and SRG Global in a JV, as well as John Holland. Testing is already underway for the first stage of the Parramatta LRT project, which includes a 12 km section from Westmead to Carlingford via Parramatta city centre and Camellia. Construction began in 2020 and was carried out by the JV of Downer and CPB Contractors.
