First section of the Bicocca – Catenanuova line in Sicily completed

The double-track extension of the 11.5 km long Bicocca – Catenanuova section of the Bicocca – Catenanuova line on the Palermo – Catania – Messina line was completed and handed over by Webuild. The beginning of operations enables the full utilisation of the 38 km long Bicocca – Catenanuova line. The contract included the construction of new railway control centres, the superstructure, the installation of signalling and communication systems, electrical substations to supply power to the trains, the renovation of Bicocca station, and the construction of a new station in Motta Sant'Anastasia. Work will continue with the laying of tracks in the two sections between Sferro and Motta Sant'Anastasia over 16 km and between Motta Sant'Anastasia and Bicocca over approximately 10.5 km. The overall project has now reached 83% of the total volume. Once the work is completed, the capacity of the line will be increased and trains will be able to reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, compared to the current 100 km/h, which is reduced to 80-90 km/h in some sections.
